    • May 1-4, 2008, Wareham, Massachusetts, USA: The New England Lace Group will hold its annual Lace Retreat in Wareham, Massachusetts on May 1-4, 2008. Jeannet Van Oord will be teaching the Continental Laces, and Susan Wenzel will teach Starts and Finishes in Torchon Lace. A Òretreat onlyÓ option is also offered. LacySusan will be the vendor. The retreat is an informal gathering where the emphasis is on relaxation and fun. The retreat is held at The Sacred Hearts Retreat Center, located on 118 acres on Buzzards Bay. You will find a beautiful meditation garden, as well as woods, meadows, and a beach, great for walking and bird watching.     • May 16th - 18th, 2008, Kansas City, Missouri, USA: Lace Guild of Greater Kansas City will be hosting a "Beginnings and Endings workshop" with Lise Thomsen. She will be teaching methods to begin and end lace. These methods will help your lace last for generations. You do not have to be a member of the guild.       CONVENTION 2008
      The Land of Lincoln Lacemakers will be the hosts in Northern Illinois. Dates are August 3rd through August 8th, 2008 at the Clocktower Resort in Rockford, Illinois. More information will be available at a later date.

    WORKSHOPS AND CONFERENCES

    • August 3-8,2008, Rockford, IL, USA: 55th I.O.L.I. Convention will be hosted by The Land of Lincoln Lacemakers in Northern Illinois.

    LACE COMPETITIONS

    EXHIBITIONS

    • Ongoing: Lace Tours at the Smithsonian. Tours are offered the first Wednesday of every month from 10:00 to noon. Tours are free and open to the public. Reservations are necessary. To register, please call (202) 633-3826. Lace making demonstrations: Watch lace making at the American History Museum, by the new Ipswich house, the first Wednesday of every month from 1:00 to 2:00 p.m. These are open to the public. No registration is necessary. Tours and demonstrations are conducted by I.O.L.I. members and Smithsonian volunteers, Sheryl DeJong and Karen Thompson from the Chesapeake Region Lace Guild. They show laces from the 15th through the 20th centuries, as well as illustrations of how the lace might have been used. Presentation topics include: working conditions of lace makers, laws prohibiting the importation of lace (resulting in smuggling), and the importance of lace as an industry.
